You finally have the keys to your dream home! It’s all very exciting until you think about all the things you need to pack. And then unpack. Boxing and moving an entire house worth of trinkets and memories seems like a daunting task. Moving is often stressful, but we have a few helpful moving tips to help you through the process.
Utilize Your Calendar
Start planning for your big move ASAP. Use a calendar to log reminders for everything from redirecting mail to planning ways to transport perishable foods. Make a packing list and stay as organized as possible to avoid forgotten items and additional stress.
Clear It Out
Moving is the best time for a spring cleaning. Host a yard sale to clear out items that have collected over the years. But make sure you do this several weeks before the start of your move!
Instead of shelling out money for bubble wrap or packing foam, wrap breakables in clothing. Slip socks around wine glasses, and fluffy sweaters around glass baking dishes. To prevent plate breakage, buy foam plates from your local grocery store and alternate stacking the real plates with the disposable ones!
Label Your Boxes
Label the sides of each box with what’s inside and which destination room it will be unpacked in. It’s a little more work upfront, but will save a lot of hassle unpacking in your new home. Make it even easier with a color-coded system! Pick a color for each room and label the box accordingly. Label the door of each room with the corresponding color so the movers know where each box belongs.
Whether you’ve decided to hire professional movers or enlisted the help of family and friends, make sure you have everything packed in boxes before the day of the move. Loose items are more likely to be lost or broken. If you do use unpaid help, treat them to dinner and drinks afterward to thank them for their help.
Use these moving tips and you’ll be settled in in no time!
If you’ve been considering building your home with Trematerra Custom Homes, then you may have already spent some time looking through the multiple floor plans we offer. Each home provides something different and picking the right one is essential to being comfortable in your new home. Since selecting the right floor plan is such an important task, we have highlighted two essential questions to ask yourself when choosing the right floor plan for your lifestyle.
Question 1: How many people will be living in your home?
It may seem like a question with an obvious and simple answer, but this is something to spend some time thinking about. Don’t just consider those who will be living in your home now; think of who could possibly live there in the future. Right now it may just be you, your spouse, and your children, but is there a possibility that Grandma or Grandpa will be moving in at some point? Have you considered a guest bedroom for friends who visit frequently? Fortunately, Trematerra offers homes that are spacious enough to accommodate any family.
Most of the custom homes offer at least three bedrooms plus a master suite. At least one of the smaller bedrooms will likely include a private bathroom that may be more comfortable for older children or guests. These rooms can also be great for people who do not have children because they offer enough space for craft rooms or in-home gyms. The various ways our floor plans are designed allow for endless possibilities for every family!
Question 2: What is the most active part of your home?
There is always one part of your home that seems to be the place where everything happens. Whether it’s the kitchen, living room, or outside patio, you’ll want this space to be easily accessible from any part of the home. For example, consider the layout of the Kensington style home [see below]. This open floor plan places the kitchen at the center of the home and connects it with the great room. This may be a more comfortable option for larger families who spend a lot of time in the socializing in the main area. Another option available for families who enjoy looking out into the backyard would be the Cambridge floor plan. When you enter a Cambridge style home, you immediately view the backyard, which can be seen from any point in the main area of the house.
