Wallpaper is making a comeback.
We’re not referring to the dated wallpaper in your grandmother’s house. We mean striking statement pieces that tie the whole room together. Wallpaper can easily add color, texture or patterns to a space that may be lacking that “it” factor. For example, consider placing a neutral colored piece of furniture, like a white love seat, in front of a chevron-patterned wall. It creates an interesting design focal point that feels fresh and unique.
Modern no longer means new.
We think one of the best ways to make a design new is to incorporate something old. Sometimes when you’re stuck on a design issue, look to older pieces for inspiration. The luxury trends of the future are about incorporating great styles of the past. Vintage pieces are unique and can easily be updated for a modern-style room. Paint or reupholster them to compliment newer pieces. You can find these types of pieces in vintage stores, vintage websites, and even exchange sites like Craigslist.
Don’t fear color!
We love the new design trend of adding bold, darker colors in a home, especially as accent walls. Designers used to shy from mixing colors, but it’s making a comeback in 2014 with many designers recommending it! However, if you’re worried about picking the right colors, refer back to one of our March blog posts about choosing color.
We think these new design trends are great, simple updates that can dramatically change the look and feel of your home. What updates are you looking forward to trying?
Walking down the paint aisle at your local home improvement store can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. There are literally hundreds of options when choosing colors for your home.
Even though it can feel like a difficult decision, choosing wisely can add a level of warmth and enjoyment to your new home. Here are a few tips when it comes to choosing colors for your home – your sacred space:
When choosing paint, go for a test run. Pick up to 6 colors that you really love and buy the smallest size of paint that you can (most stores will offer a sample size). Paint a swatch of each color on your wall, and after a week of seeing the colors, it’s likely you’ll have a clear frontrunner.
Coordinate with your furniture. If you have a piece of furniture that you invested quite a bit of money in, work around it. For example, if you own a huge green couch, painting your walls a shade of pink might not be the best idea because it would then require that you buy a new couch as well. Work around your bigger pieces when picking your colors.
Know your colors and use moderation. Just because you like cobalt blue doesn’t mean you’ll love it floor to ceiling on the walls of your home office. Subdued hues of your favorite colors can bring in your love of the shade while keeping your home subtle enough to live in every day.
Know the purpose of your room and the feeling you’ll want walking into it. Different colors evoke different emotions. For example, blues and greens can make people feel calm and relaxed, white rooms can seem spacious but can also come across as cold and unfriendly, and red rooms can evoke strong emotions and are associated with warmth and comfort. Consider those feelings when choosing the paint for each room and what you want to feel when you’re in there.
